You can get a smoke machine for under $100 off ebay, or borrow one from a friend. I wouldn't aimlessly just replace it yet, but test for actual leaks and then go from there.ĭisconnect the purge valve that you replaced and feed smoke from a smoke machine through the pipe and then get under the car and look for anywhere along the vapor line it might be leaking out from. The DMTL is part # WTG500040 and located on the driver's side behind the rear wheel arch plastic liner. It's possible the detection pump (called a DMTL) itself could also be defective and registering a leak due to changed tolerances that come with older age of the pump. Maybe the o-rings at the unions where the nylon fuel vapor line are leaking? Or the charcoal canister or lines themselves might be compromised. I believe in this situation your fuel vapor leak detection pump is sensing a leak (whether there is one or not) and reporting it to the engine computer, which stores that code. IIRC the P0442 means that there is a leak between the fuel purge valve and the charcoal canister and fuel tank. So if the engine starts really rough and sounds bad, there might be more at play than just that code.

A P0442 code does not always directly correlate to poor engine idling. Click to expand.I think there is probably a difference between the sound/feeling that the engine wants to shut off and the P0442 code.
